- Comment[Landman: Poka actually considers this to be the best pro move. It
- has also seen C16 and Q16 in this context.]
- (
- ;
- White[pd]
- Comment[Landman: Poka thinks Q15 is better. One way of looking at this
- might be, that after Q16 there is only one big corner move left \(at C16\),
- which Black gets. After 4.Q15, there are two such moves left, and so White
- is guaranteed a shimari.]
- (
- ;
- Black[jp]
- Comment[Maas: San ren sei, rather popular lately. I would have approached
- the white stone on the 4-5 point instead, but at this stage as Lance Kemper
- said "anything works". This doesn't mean you can play at random, but nearly
- any standard move is compatible with some possible game plan and only a few
- points worse than the "best" move, quite playable in amateur games.
-
- Peter Kim: This is only true if you are willing to aid white in building
- his moyo with moves e16 \(a high influence and center oriented move\) and
- q16 \(again a move good for working toward a moyo\), but from further moves
- is appears that white has gone for a more territorial game. White still has
- the potential for a moyo, but it seems less likely now.
-
- Landman: Against 4.Q15, Poka thinks this is the best move. Since the upper
- corners are miai, that seems reasonable. But against 4.Q16 Black should
- invade immediately at 5.C16. A reasonable continuation would be White at
- 6.D14 to build central influence \(both to work with the Q16 stone, and to
- begin to counter the Black nirensei\). At any rate, the focus of the game
- would then be the upper left for a while.]
- (
- ;
- White[kc]
- Comment[Maas: I would have made an enclosure in the upper left corner, but
- again at this stage "anything works". Shawe-Shiuan Wang
- <wangs@sol.engr.umbc.edu> says this move is bad, see black's good reply at
- Q10 which black missed in the game.
-
- Peter Kim: I think that enclosing the upper left corner is premature, and
- by playing as high as white did, white doesn't appear to want the corner
- too urgently. L17 works better with what white has already established, a
- flexible fuseki for territory or moyo. I think c16 \(or something like\)
- lacks tempo at this point. Black has taken a big point of potential, white
- should answer with the same.
-
- rON: I was shocked to see white \(Chris\) opening up so passivly. Black
- opened with a standard 4-4 to san-ren-sai on the lower side; very quiet and
- non-offensive. White opened up quiet as well; I think white would have been
- a bit better off starting at d15 instead of e16 for a 5-4 opening, because I
- feel it better faces the 4-4 pointing into the center that black opened up
- with.
-
- Char: Thumbs down: Black seems to be expanding faster than white.
-
- Doug: Thumbs up: White's moves are balanced both territorrialy and
- influentially.
-
- Jos: Personally I would not play this at all. You give black a chance to
- attack your left upper corner to prevent your shimari. Imagine the sequence
- B:e16, W:e17, B:f17, W:d17, B:f14 and black starts having magnificent
- influence. So you should answer something like g17 or g16, but whites
- position looks already a little cramped. During the following moves neither
- side seems to consider the shimari \(white at e16\) very big. In my eyes
- that is a big mistake!
-
- Xiang-Ming Liu: I would attack the lower right corner. I think if white
- wants to counterbalance black's moyo, L16 is better.
-
- Landman: Out of Poka's opening book. To me, this seems a little tight. It's
- like a low Chinese shrunk by two spaces. Surely the shimari at C16 is
- bigger. However, Poka's \(19 kyu\) algorithm likes this move a lot. Almost
- as much as K11 ... :->]
- (
- ;
- Black[dj]
- Comment[rON: Black went passive again by playing the 'big point' on the
- left, giving white the 'big point' on the right.
-
- Char: Thumbs up: Good stategic move following San-ren-sei opening.
-
- Doug: Thumbs down: Gote. An approach move would be better.
-
- Jos: If not at e16, than the right hand side is far superior now. White has
- no good extension on the left side as long as his corner stone is still this
- open. So one possibility is r14. If W:o16 you play at Q10 and are in
- magnificent shape. White cannot play like this. His stone at L17 looks an
- itsy bit overconcentrated already. Alternative: W:q11, B:r17 and white has
- to choose between q17 and r16. I prefer the black position.
-
- Shawe-Shiuan Wang: I would choose Q10. Following are the moves I expect:
- 7-Q10, 8-D10, 9-R14, 10-O16, 11-C16, 12-D14. Because ladder \(C14, C13\) is
- good for black and black's territory is larger than white's. I think black
- is better. \(Hence, 6 L-17 may not be a good move.\)]
- (
- ;
- White[qj]
- Comment[Maas: Ain't seen no action yet ... Peter Kim: With black playing san
- ren sei it looks like both parties are capable of working for a moyo, but
- white looks a bit more like he's working toward territory on the edge, but
- he's flexible enough to still go for a moyo. \(I like white's position
- slightly better\)
-
- Char and Doug: 2 Thumbs Down: Gote. White should take the initiative.
-
- Xiangming Liu: Still, if you want to build a moyo, Q10 is better.]
- (
- ;
- Black[qm]
- Comment[Maas: This move looks bad now that I think about it later. White's
- stone is low, so this move doesn't threaten to undermine it. It's on the
- third line, so it doesn't threaten to cap the white stone. It's two-skips
- away, so it doesn't threaten to squeeze much. The center, or a kakari
- \(approach enemy corner\) might have been better. Wang agrees and says he'd
- pick the kakari at C16.
-
- Peter Kim: This may have been better at k10. Black after white's k10 is
- going to have a much hard time refuting white's moyo, AND prevent white
- getting enough center influence to attack black's potential territory. also
- after white k10 black does not have a good move, as seen in moves 11-13.
-
- rON: Black loses some of his advantage by playing r07. It, too, is passive,
- and doesn't really face anything in particular. White jumps on the
- opportunity to take a very large point right in the center.
-
- Char: Thumbs down: Counters the strategy behind San-ren-sei and doesn't
- really guard the corner.
-
- Doug: Thumbs down: What does this stone do?
-
- Jos: e16 is still superior.
-
- Shawe-Shiuan Wang: I would choose C16. I don't think R7 is the biggest move
- because there is white stone is on R10 but not Q10.
-
- Xiangming Liu: 9-R7 is not as important as K10.
-
- Michael: I now think this is way too slow for what I want to do in this
- game. As numerous netpeople pointed out, playing low like this makes a
- mockery of my hitherto high strategy.]
- (
- ;
- White[jj]
- Comment[Maas: I was sort of expecting that at some point somebody would play
- in the center to stake out a large moyo \(territorial framework\). White has
- now done so. Now the burden is on black to prevent white from turning most
- of it into territory, by reducing and/or invading sooner or later. It should
- be easy for black to reduce the moyo, but if he waits too long it may indeed
- turn into white territory. The theme of this game is now set. Wang would
- pick C16 enclosing the corner instead.
-
- White: Tengen I win!!! There is one of those sayings floating around the
- local go club: "the first one to tengen wins" :-\)
-
- Jos: You don't make territory that easily. Look at some pro-games and see
- how much territory they really get out of such a moyo.
-
- rON: This point \(White K10\) is important, especially in this game,
- because both players have designated that they want to play a
- center-oriented game \(3 4-4 points and the 5-4, all four opening moves are
- center oriented openings\). This point will serve white very well later on
- when he \(white\) starts attacking.
-
- Doug: Thumbs level: This has a shin-fuseki feel. Will white know how to use
- it?
-
- Char: Thumbs down: I think now is the time to attack. I like the move at
- O3.
-
- Shawe-Shiuan Wang: I would choose C16.]
- (
- ;
- Black[df]
- Comment[Shawe-Shiuan Wang <wangs@sol.engr.umbc.edu> would pick D13 instead.
- See the bad shape that results after this D14 and black's next move. Maas
- agrees, simply make a two-skip jump to D13 then black wouldn't have to make
- another move here after white replies, so black would get sente and good
- shape.
-
- Player: I preferred to approach the corner because I wanted to keep an
- outside 'feel' to my game. I didn't want to lose my stone behind a white
- wall if I invade at the 3-4 point.
-
- Peter Kim: 11-d14 is about the only move black can make at this point for
- an attack. If black goes for the corner. White can seal black in and
- increase his influence toward the center. Something white appears to have
- been willing to do from the begining, since he player the 4-5 point. If
- black plays on the upper right side of the 4-5 point, white can build a
- loose wall on BOTH sides of black. Again this would improve white's moyo on
- the right, make taking the upper left corner easier for white to "put in the
- bank", and leave black with a vulnerable group on the board.
-
- Char and Doug: 2 Thumbs Down: What does this move hope to accomplish?
-
- Jos: 11-d14 is really bad. Now you force white to take the important point.
-
- Shawe-Shiuan Wang: How about D13? these three 3 black stones
- \(D10,D14,F14\) are not in good shape.]
- ;
- White[cd]
- Comment[Char and Doug: 2 Thumbs up: Good response. A move white wanted to
- make anyway, and black induced him to make it.]
- ;
- Black[ff]
- Comment[Maas: Next, white can either try to turn the center into territory
- by blocking black's advance, or invade somewhere in the lower leftside or
- along the bottom. White won't be able to actually turn much into territory,
- but threatening to do so will constrain black's options. Note also the
- inefficient shape of black's stones at D10 D14 and F14, pointed out by
- Shawe-Shiuan Wang <wangs@sol.engr.umbc.edu>.
-
- Jos: ... there is no territory, just influence. And one of the rules about
- influence is that if you try to convert it directly into territory you get
- too little. You can only turn influence profitably into territory if you
- have something that can keep the opponent busy, like while you attack a
- group. That can give you a chance to seal off one side without him being
- able to come in from the other side. As it is, black can build several
- living groups insides whites sphere of influence. So the focus will turn now
- to how white should use his stone at k10. It is a little bit far away from
- his other stones on the upper and right side, because both are on the third
- line.
-
- Peter Kim: Once white has taken the 3-4 point black again is forced to play
- f14 anything else will allow white to either make weak black groups on the
- board, or convert even more of white's potential in to territory. \(Similar
- reasoning to 11-d14\) The problem \(that began with white's move at k10\) is
- made worse now that white has sente. B14 for white is really good here for
- white since it is urgent for black to answer here, but has no good way to
- strengthen his two stones well and regain sente. White can then commence an
- attack on black's moyo or territory, especially if white utilizes k10.
-
- rON: The passive opening by black allows white to draw black into whatever
- type of game white wanted to play. White could have just as easily elected
- to play the 'big-moyo' type game, or the lets get down and fight type game,
- or anything in-between. White is going to chose the fighting game.
- Passivity in the opening will allow your opponent to draw you into their
- type of game, which is something you don't want.
-
- Char and Doug: Thumbs level: We must wait and see how this will be used.
-
- Jos: 13-f14 seems fine to me. But now you are running after white. He has
- gotten the initiative. Just because you refused to take the good point and
- let him take k10 too. He should never get both points.]
- (
- ;
- White[hc]
- Comment[Maas: Hmmm, white takes top-side territory instead of protecting the
- center moyo.
-
- Michael: I was happy with how slow this move appears to be, \(although it
- does look nice and solid\).
-
- Lee Schumacher: White 14 seems inconsistent with the influence oriented
- plays he made previously. If you're going to play on the side, G16 is the
- spot.
-
- *** Possible erratum: Another record of the game shows G17 instead of H17
- for that move. Which is correct?]
- ;
- Black[qf]
- Comment[Maas: Black invades the side first. If he maintains sente he can go
- back to reduce the center moyo from the left. Lee Schumacher suggests
- capping at P10 \(presumably in sente\), followed by the 3-3 invasion at R17.]
- (
- ;
- White[qh]
- Comment[Maas: White's stone on the right was getting weak, so white combined
- an extension and a pincer. But now black can obliterate the center moyo \(if
- he's careful not to get killed or in bad danger\).]

- strengthening his weak upper right-side group.]
- (
- ;
- Black[ph]
- Comment[Michael: I think this move may be too much of a contact move. Still,
- my eventual shape is quite nice. Maas: Indeed. This only strengthens the

- in the book 'Lessons in the Fundamentals of Go'\)]
- ;
- Black[oh]
- (
- ;
- White[oi]
- Comment[Lee Schumacher: This is wrong, pushing from behind + giving black
- the hane at the head of 2 stones. O 10 is better shape. Maas: I missed
- that. Now that you've shown me that, I agree.]
- ;
- Black[ni]
- (
- ;
- White[nh]
- Comment[Maas: I don't like that cut. Why not just hane underneath instead?
- Isn't that the way the stones walk? \(Schumacher answers that white's hane
- would be locally bad shape due to black's double hane reply, but playable
- for white.\) With this cut, white is just asking black to atari then extend
- downward from O11 and cut white in two. The group on the edge will have to
- get two eyes before playing elsewhere, and then black will be able to put
- pressure on the center white stone.]
- (
- ;
- Black[ng]
- Comment[Lee Schumacher: the proverb says to extend from a cross cut, but
- with white strong on the upper side this would leave black's group in the
- lurch. Thus 29 is the correct side, but the wrong move. The problem as
- black soon discovers is that his cutting stone is weakened by white's
- response. I would recommend N14 - the one space jump is never wrong \(since
- we're
- going with proverbs\). Sure white can mangle your eye shape
- with the atari at P13, but in the process he limits his own liberties, and
- your group is still escaping into the middle. Plus, none of this affects
- the all important cutting stone. Maas: I've included his complete remark
- above because it seems to make sense. See the variation I concocted based on
- the reccommended move.]
- ;
- White[mh]
- (
- ;
- Black[mg]
- Comment[Maas: Now black is asking for his cutting stone \(originally a
- hane\) to be captured. In return his upper group is a bit more in the open.
- I don't like this move for black. If black had extended downward and white
- hane'd, black could counter-hane and have nice shape.]
- ;
- White[mj]
- Comment[Maas: Good for white. If you can capture a cutting stone, you should
- do it immediately. It's not actually captured completely, but trying to
- escape immediately would be strategically bad, allowing white to enlarge his
- surrounding groups in sente. Assuming black plays elsewhere, perhaps shortly
- White can play somewhere below there, where the black moyo is reduced
- simultaneously with really capturing the stone?]
- ;
- Black[lh]
- Comment[Maas: Aji keshi, i.e. throwing away your options for later play. Now
- the stone will be in atari, and black has lost options of peeking from two
- directions if he needs extra stones in the vicinity later. Black should just
- tenuki now instead of forcing the sequence. Schumacher points out that since
- the black stone wasn't completely captured, this forcing play also has the
- disadvantage of losing the potential of saving the stone later. He
- continues: Abandoning the cutting stone makes white very thick in the
- center. This has a big impact black's prospects for making territory on the
- lower side.]
- ;
- White[mi]
- (
- ;
- Black[kf]
- Comment[Maas: Too tight and not urgent. If black tenukis instead, and white
- cuts, black ataris \(sacrificing the stone that was cut off\) and black is
- nicely connected to the left at minimal cost. If the cut-off stone were an
- important cutting stone, then keeping it alive would be urgent. It isn't
- here. Because the white group already has two eyes and is connected, if
- black lets it capture another stone or two and get slightly bigger and more
- eyes it's no big deal.]
- ;
- White[cn]
- Comment[Michael: Here I have lost the initiative and will just have to hope
- that I can get it back eventually. Maas: Because of black making that
- unnecessary move, white now gets to play where black should have played.
- Black's previous move would have made a big difference if used here instead
- of the upper-center. Note because of black letting white capture the stone
- at O11, the white stones from K10 to S12 are connected and have two eyes
- already, so it's completely safe for white to venture an invasion at this
- time.]

- Black[fp]
- ;
- White[gn]
- Comment[Maas: Is that really the best move for white? What about sliding
- toward the corner, then a contact play against C8 to get the white invading
- group settled? Lee Schumacher answers: I believe this is correct. Compare
- having a black stone there. I think white has an excellent game - solid
- territory on the upper side, lots of central power, and no weak groups. \(In
- this case, 3 dan does make a difference.\)]
- ;
- Black[hp]
- Comment[End of main line as of 1991.Oct.31 23. Maas: Gee, that was fun
- finding so much fault with the stone-walking in upper right center. At this

- Black[pq]
- Comment[Maas: This closes off the corner solidly so there's no tricky stuff

- ;
- White[kr]
- Comment[Maas: In my humble opinion, this large-knight's move is possible
- only because black didn't make the contact play but made the looser move
- instead. \(Do the 3-dans agree white is getting more this way than the
- standard way?\)]
- (
- ;
- Black[ir]
- Comment[Maas: I don't approve of this move either. I would have made the
- contact play at L3, forcing white to decide whether to connect and be

- I'm on shakey ground and solicit advice of the 3-dans.]

- Comment[Maas: White has been allowed to settle his group in sente \(black

- If black didn't have the corner so solidly closed off, i.e. if he had

- (
- ;
- White[qk]
- Comment[Maas: This is more complicated than simply playing at P9, but takes

- ;
- Black[no]
- Comment[Black uses sente to nearly surround the lower group. It would be

- (
- ;
- White[kp]
- Comment[Player: Sorry it took so long I wanted to consider the postion for a

- Black extends directly upward, making it difficult for white to connect
- through the narrows? After white lives on the bottom, Black will then have
- thickness in the center and be able to split the other two groups, putting
- the lower-leftside group into some danger. By attacking first one group then

- Comment[End of main branch as of 1991.Nov.15 07. White needs to finish
- settling his lower-leftside group before it gets attacked too heavily. Black
- will then probably have sente to stake out some territory in the center.
- \(The attacking-groups part of the middle game will be over, and we'll be in
